Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart pressed Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) over public safety and prison reform, grilling the governor on whether his state's certification programs actually work to benefit inmates.

Stewart examined “America’s Incarceration Epidemic” in the latest episode of his show, which included an interview with Newsom at San Quentin State Prison.

The host asked Newsom about California's certification processes, questioning if the programs give prisoners "false hope" regarding a "path to redemption" after incarceration.

Newsom admitted that there is a societal stigma surrounding the formerly incarcerated community, yet reasoned that "the internal shame and the internal stigma is even more pronounced.” He went on to explain that internal prison programs aim to boost the confidence of inmates, while Stewart noted that the governor wants to turn the prison system from a factory into something “more human.”

“But you can’t treat them as humans when they live in this alien, dehumanizing factory environment," Stewart said.

Stewart later challenged Newsom on issues surrounding parole, noting that some fail for innocuous actions, while others end up killing police officers once released.

The host concluded the confrontational yet fair and unbiased interview by echoing the public's demand for public safety, as well as calling for humane treatment of California's inmates.

MEDIA LOSER:
Seb Gorka

Former Trump adviser Seb Gorka ripped into Ron DeSantis while on NewsmaxThursday ... mere moments after Florida Governor's own interview on the network.

On Thursday’s edition of The Balance, host Eric Bolling asked DeSantis, who is seen as a likely 2024 presidential candidate, if he’d consider being Trump’s vice presidential nominee if it came to that.

DeSantis threw cold water on the idea, claiming to be “more of an executive guy” who is best suited for being "able to make things happen."

The governor’s pretty tame response prompted quite a reaction from Gorka, who noted DeSantis has remained quiet regarding the potential indictment of ex-President Donald Trump in Manhattan.

“Let’s just say the governor of Florida has not showered himself in glory in the last four days,” Gorka said, later adding, "And then in a press conference on Monday on another topic, he’s asked, and he does this snarky thing twice, he has to talk about hush money for porn stars twice and get giggles from the peanut gallery.”

Gorka also called the governor’s interview with Piers Morgan a "bloody embarrassment," and raged that his "big ego" made him unsatisfied with the idea of "being the second in line to the presidency."

His comments, which can be taken with the biggest grain of salt coming from a former Trump aide, were also unfair to Bolling, who conducted a largely non-partisan interview with DeSantis.
