Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Tony Atkins

Local reporter Tony Atkins performed a stunningly heroic act as Hurricane Ian ripped through Orlando, Florida.

The WESH 2 news reporter carried a woman through floodwaters on Thursday after she attempted to drive through on her way to work.

Atkins first attempted to wave the woman down and stop her from driving in the flood, but was unsuccessful as she tried to drive through the wreckage anyway.

The woman's car stalled out while she was driving, leaving her stuck in the flood.

Eventually, she called for help, but there were no first responders available in the area, soAtkins took it upon himself to descend into the high water and offer her assistance.

He walked into nearly waist-deep water, pulled the woman out of her car, put her on his back and carried her back to safety through the flooding.

Atkins' incredible act was captured by his photographer and has since gone viral, with viewers of the rescue largely calling him a hero.

The reporter later shared a message he said he received from the woman’s daughter thanking him for helping her out of the water.

"I want to Thankyou so much for helping and rescuing my mom! (The nurse you carried on your
back) We are so grateful for you ! A true hero," read the message, alongside a heart emoji.

Atkins later shared a map on Twitter to help others trying to get to the hospital find a clear street.

"Two women in labor have pulled up to me asking to help getting to the hospital. They almost zipped into the water," he wrote. "Hopefully this map serves as a quick resource to people on the fly."

Atkins has since been roundly celebrated for the remarkable act of bravery. A much-deserved round of applause, Atkins -- you really are a true hero!

MEDIA LOSER:
Kara McKinney

Media figures have compared a number of public figures to former Italian leaders this week, as Italy elected its first far-right prime minister since Benito Mussolini and ... Lizzo played the flute?

Yes, you read that correctly.

While conservative media figures seem completely fine with Giorgia Meloni's victory, they've completely melted down because Lizzo played a crystal flute that belonged to James Madison during her concert this week.

Lizzo, a classically trained flutist, made headlines for playing the 200-year-old flute during a D.C. concert, prompting some commentators to spiral on air.

OAN host Kara McKinney went as far as to compare Lizzo's flute playing to Nero, the fifth emperor of Rome and the last of Rome's first dynasty, playing the fiddle while Rome burned in the year 64.

“They say Nero watched as Rome burned in a devastating fire playing his fiddle as the events and morals played out below. Well now as America Burns, Lizzo plays a 200-year-old crystal flute that was lent to her by the Library of Congress. It originally belonged to founding Father James Madison, whose home was also being wokified as we speak,” McKinney began.

McKinney was likely referencing news that the team that oversees Madison’s Virginia home, Montpelier, launched plans to build a national slavery monument on the grounds of the estate.

“Remember how last night we talked about soft totalitarianism, which is what so-called liberal democracy actually is? Well, keep that in mind as you watch Lizzo twerk and mockery the Founding Fathers and their ideals. We are being colonized by leftist ideologues and they laugh in our faces as they do it,” she concluded.

There are a lot of opinions about the playing of the flute. But it's safe to say comparing it to the madness and savage neglect the historic idiom entails is way over the top.
