Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Matthew McConaughey

After advocating for gun legislation shortly after the Uvalde school shooting, Matthew McConaugheycalled out extremist politicians in an essay detailing his experience on the Hill.

In a Tuesday essay for Esquire, the actor detailed his experience meeting with lawmakers following the massacre, revealing the process made him lose some “reverence” for the way the government operates.

After detailing his emotional connection to the tragedy, as McConaughey grew up in Uvalde, the actor revealed his time in Washington D.C. led him to believe the “extremists” in both parties need to be removed for any reasonable debates to happen.

“I arrived in Washington with such a reverence for our government and those who run it," he wrote.

"While I’m not going to say that I lost that reverence, I did see the most powerful legislators in America playing an implicit political game, one they seemed to be handcuffed to, even systematically imprisoned by, as if it were the price of entry."

While McConaughey did not name any specific politicians for being hesitant to talk to him, he called several out for using the excuse of the midterms to explain why they could not support legislation on a hot topic issue like guns.

“Hard to be in the make-a-difference business if you’re only in the reelection business,” McConaughey wrote.

He later said that both major political parties have become “little more than counterpunchers,” adding that politicians are more willing to react and attack than act.

“It’s high time we take the megaphone back from the extremists who’ve been manufacturing these false fractures among us,” he wrote.

“They’ve been selling us soft porn at the pep rally for too long.”

Props to McConaughey for consistently immortalizing those lost, for continuing to advocate for change, and for exposing both the "extremists" and "the most powerful legislators in America" for failing to enact bipartisan legislation.

MEDIA LOSER:
Fox News Host Tucker Carlson

Tucker Carlson failed to address an anti-Semitic tweet Kanye West shared after speaking with the Fox News host in a softball interview last week. In fact, the host continued to celebrate the musician.

Last week, after West raised eyebrows for donning a “White Lives Matter” shirt alongside Candace Owens at Paris Fashion Week, Carlson aired an interview he did with West over two episodes.

During the interview, West suggested employees of retail giant The Gap may have had advanced notice of the Uvalde school shooting and he also claimed, “Nike is gerrymandering Black people.”

Over the weekend, West posted a threatening and anti-Semitic tweet that Twitter has since deleted.

Twitter locked West out of his account as a result, and the tweet was widely condemned -- though not byOwens, who defended it on Monday.

Later on Tuesday, she appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight, where the two spoke about the “White Lives Matter” shirts.

Neither brought up West’s anti-Semitic tweet during the five-minute segment, instead celebrating West.

Owens told Carlson the shirt was “artistic expression” that exposes “stunning hypocrisy," later adding that "there’s a hatred toward White people in this country. It is undeniable.”

Carlson wrapped up the segment without having mentioned West’s hateful comments about the Jewish community at all.

Motherboard has since obtained unaired footage of Carlson's interview with West, in which West made bigoted comments about Jewish people and launched into a concerning rant about “fake children” he claimed were planted to control his own children.

Instead of airing the conversation in full, or deciding to cut the segment altogether, as it features bizarre and inflammatory comments from someone who has been at the center of mental health discussions, Carlson edited the footage for his benefit.
