Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Lester Holt

For the first time in nearly three years, NBC News' Nightly News with Lester Holt topped ABC News in the key demo for two consecutive broadcasts.

The show, anchored by Lester Holt, is the only newscast to increase both total viewership and ratings in the key 25-54 age demographic in week-over-week measurements.

Holt's show is specifically up 12,000 total viewers and 9,000 demo viewers.

The week of Feb. 20, Nightly News ranked second in total viewers for the week with 7.204 million total viewers, excluding specials, sports & syndication.

The ratings were enough to top CBS News by 43 percent -- marking the largest advantage over the network since December.

The show also averaged 1.164 million demo viewers a night that week, beating CBS News by 51 percent, and generating the smallest gap between the NBC and ABCs' total viewership since 2022.

NBC's demo gap between ABC is also the smallest its been since 2021.

The impressive ratings from Holt were enough -- at least for now -- to unseat ABC News anchor David Muir, who has maintained a stranglehold on the top spot in the nightly news ratings for years.

Kudos on these numbers, which let NBC top ABC in the demo twice in a row last week, despite Muir's interview with President Joe Biden.

MEDIA LOSER:
Rupert Murdoch

A new court filing from Dominion Voting Systems as part of the company’s $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News revealed a new trove of shocking evidence indicting Rupert Murdoch, the chairman of Fox Corporation, and his stewardship of Fox News.

In under-oath testimony, he admitted that Fox News hosts “were endorsing” lies about the 2020 presidential election.  He also emailed former House Speaker and Fox Corp. board member Paul Ryan confirming veteran host Sean Hannity “has been privately disgusted" by former President Donald Trump and his election lies "for weeks.”

The filing noted that Murdoch and Suzanne Scott, the CEO of Fox News, discussed the day before the Jan. 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, having Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham issuing a joint statement declaringBiden had won.

Monday's filing comes after a previous filing by Dominion, which included a trove of emails and text messages exchanged among Fox News executives and on-air personalities, expressing dismay over the “crazy” election misinformation, and fearing losing viewers to competitors on the right like Newsmax and OAN.

The suit has already prompted copious doomsaying by a spectrum of pundits, including Mediaite Editor-in-Chief Aidan McLaughlin and famed First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams, and this filing is only making things look worse for Murdoch as his media empire.
