Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Fox News' Martha MacCallum

Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum pressed Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) on his campaign efforts during the 2022 midterms and what his less-than-stellar record might say about his future.

The conversation kicked off with MacCallum noting that only one GOP congressional candidate that Youngkin supported in a tight race in Virginia won in the end. Youngkin noted the victory was crucial to the GOP retaking the House, but explained there were challenges.

Youngkin pointed to the challenges of trying to unseat an incumbent, adding that the election taught him that "voters want results."

“So, you traveled the whole country and there were five governors who you supported who won out of 15," MacCallum replied, unsatisfied with his answer. "It’s not a great margin."

She continued, "So those losses, what did they say about the candidates, about your ability to help people across the finish line and about your own future?”

Youngkin claimed he "picked hard races" in states where "Joe Biden had won by ten points."

MacCallum also pushed Youngkin on Donald Trump's standing in the GOP, asking, “Do you think it’s time for Republican voters to move on from the former president?”

Props to MacCallum for pressing Youngkin on essential topics within the GOP and asking all the right follow up questions.

MEDIA LOSER:
Elon Musk

Twitter suspended reporters who have covered or criticized Elon Musk, including CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, the Washington Post’s Drew Harwell, the New York Times’ Ryan Mac, commentator Keith Olbermann, and political video influencer Aaron Rupar.

Musk claimed the accounts were suspended for “doxxing” because the journalists in question shared information about the @ElonJet account he suspended after explicitly promising he would not touch the account. He abruptly ended the interview when he was challenged by one of the banned journalists, who pointed out that what he described was not, in fact, “doxxing.”

Rupar, who made Mediaite’s list of the Most Influential in News Media for 2022 along with O'Sullivan, said he does not know why his account was suspended.

“I have absolutely no information at all,” he told Mediaite on Thursday night. “All it says is that my account is suspended. I haven’t been given a reason, explanation, or been looped in about any possible duration.”

On Friday morning, CNN's Oliver Darcy and Sara Fischer laid out the potential effects these suspensions will have on journalism saying, "It’s clear there are no rules. If you irritate Elon Musk, you can get banned from the platform."

Musk, who has called himself a free speech absolutist, essentially spent Thursday night banning journalists from a massive information platform. Not a great look.
