Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Geoff Bennett

PBS NewsHour co-anchor Geoff Bennett grilled Norfolk Southern CEO Alan H. Shaw about his company’s recent train derailment and release of toxic chemicals near East Palestine, Ohio.

In a Tuesday interview, Bennett asked Shaw about Norfolk Southern's commitment to rebuilding East Palestine following the catastrophic derailment.

Bennett later confronted the executive on his company's own past lobbying against a safety rule, noting that the company spent "millions upon millions of dollars" lobbying against a proposed rule that mandated at least two crew members on trains at all time.

Shaw insisted that the company was "very focused on following the science" regarding rail safety, and vowed to figure out a safety plan once the investigation into the derailment concludes.

Props to Bennett for holding the executive accountable for his potential role in the derailment, especially as media figures have largely focused on the politics surrounding the incident.

MEDIA LOSER:
Sean Hannity

Fox News host Sean Hannity appeared to be pretty on board with a “national divorce” while speaking to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Tuesday.

In a Monday tweet, Greene called for a separation of “red states and blue states," insisting, "We need a national divorce."

Hannity invited the representative to his show on Tuesday and granted her five minutes to spew her absolute absurdity to his millions of viewers.

He introduced Greene by suggesting a "divorce" may be the only answer to the nation's opposing viewpoints.

Greene, who appeared thankful to gain Hannity's support, went on to lament that "regular Americans" are being "bullied by the left, abused by the left, and disrespected by the left.” She went on to claim that a U.S. civil war is an inevitable event that the right needs to prepare for.

Hannity, one of the most powerful hosts in cable news, offered no pushback on the civil war comment, continuing to tragically treat Greene's attention-seeking proposals as legitimate.
