MEDIA WINNER: Lesley Stahl 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl confronted Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi over whether “the Holocaust happened" in a new interview. Stahl, who traveled to Iran to interview the president, asked point blank if he believed the Holocaust happened, adding, "That six million Jews were slaughtered?” Raisi refused to admit that the Holocaust occurred, prompting Stahl to keep pushing. “Look, historical events should be investigated by researchers and historians,” Raisi said. “There are some signs that it happened. If so, they should allow it to be investigated and researched.” Stahl reasoned that Raisi was still "not sure" that the genocide was real before pivoting to Raisi's views on Israel and the United States' killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. "Are you intending to retaliate by assassinating officials from the Trump administration?" Stahl asked. Raisi called the assassination of Soleimani a "heinous crime" and confirmed Iran wants "justice to be served." He also claimed Iran would not "carry out the same actions" by assassinating a U.S. official, yet the DOJ has already charged a member of Iran's Revolutionary Guard with plotting to assassinate John Bolton. Props to Stahl for pressing Raisi on numerous contentious topics, which also included the Iran nuclear deal, the country’s nuclear weapons program, American hostages in Iran, U.S. sanctions, and Raisi’s human rights record. |
