Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos

ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos put both Republican and Democratic leaders in the hot seat on Sunday.

Stephanopoulos first confronted House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries over what many Republicans are calling election-denying rhetoric.

Ever since Democrats elected Jeffries to take over for Nancy Pelosi as their House leader, the New York representative has come taken heat from those who recalled his claims that Donald Trump was an illegitimate president who stole and cheated his way to power.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) went after Jeffries for this by calling him out in a recent floor speech — noting Jeffries called Trump a “fake president.”

Stephanopoulos played tape of McConnell’s speech, and asked Jeffries to respond to Republicans equating his rhetoric with Trump’s denialism in the wake the of 2020 campaign.

The ABC host continued to impressively push Jeffries as he tried to duck the question.

In another Sunday interview, the anchor got Rep. Dave Joyce (R-IN) tying himself in knots to avoid disavowing Trump after the former president called for the “termination” of the U.S. Constitution.

Instead of answering Stephanopoulos' questions, Joyce argued that "people are not interested in looking backwards," prompting the anchor to engage in a ruthless back and forth with the representative.

“I don’t see how you can move forward if your candidate is for suspending the Constitution,” Stephanopoulos concluded.

MEDIA LOSER:
GMA3 anchors T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach

GMA3 co-anchors T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach were taken off the air days after tabloids reported on their alleged relationship.

Kim Godwin, the president of ABC News, made the announcement on a Monday staff call, as first reported by Variety and confirmed by other outlets.

According to CNN’s Oliver Darcy, Godwin deemed the saga a “distraction" and benched the co-anchors "while ABC figures things out.”

They had initially returned to work on Thursday and Friday after the Daily Mail reported that Holmes and Robach, both of whom are married, had been having an affair. Neither mentioned the controversy on-air, yet Holmes declared, “It’s been a great week."

"Speak for yourself,” Robach quipped in response.

According to Page Six, Goodwin previously decided that Holmes and Robach would not be disciplined, as their relationship did not violate company policy. She reversed the decision on Monday, explaining that the scandal had become an "internal and external distraction" that could hurt the organization.

The tabloid further reported that Holmes is now getting a divorce from Marilee Fiebig, his wife of 10 years. Prior to his relationship with Robach, Holmes -- a self-proclaimed "marriage proponent" -- allegedly cheated on his wife with GMA producer Natasha Singh in 2016. Fiebig was also reportedly "blindsided" by the recent alleged affair.

While Robach reportedly left her husband, Andrew Shue, in August, she and Holmes reportedly engaged in a secret workplace relationship that now has the duo benched.
