Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Fox's Stuart Varney

Fox Business host Stuart Varney sounds like he’s really done with Donald Trump, torching the former president and his standing in the Republican Party on Wednesday.

Varney first addressed the Georgia Senate runoff election between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and the Trump-endorsed Herschel Walker. The host laid into Trump for his already poor influence on the midterm elections and suggested his recent call to terminate the Constitution could spoil the chances of yet another one of his candidates.

Solidifying his point, Varney showed a collection of Trump-backed candidates that already lost their midterm elections, including Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, Don Bolduc in New Hampshire, Tudor Dixon in Michigan, Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania, and Kari Lake in Arizona.

Varney then slammed Trump for suggesting the Constitution could be suspended over his baseless claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election, highlighting the former president's efforts to walk back his comments by lashing out at the media.

The Fox Business host accused Trump of playing "right into the Democrats' hands" while losing his “iron grip” on the Republican Party.

He was also clearly disappointed in Trump's 2024 announcement, and in a recent interview with Lara Trump, asked the former president’s daughter-in-law if Trump had lost the “old magic.”

It's not easy to condemn Trump's unacceptable behavior and rhetoric to an audience that doesn't want to hear it. That's what makes Varney speaking out worthy of applause.

MEDIA LOSER:
Keith Olbermann

Former MSNBC star Keith Olbermann demanded that Donald Trump be “seized,” thrown in a “stockade,” and tried in a military court over his Truth Social post calling for the termination of the Constitution.

Trump made the remark after reporter Matt Taibbi posted a Twitter thread that suggested the platform made a clear effort to censor the New York Post's Hunter Biden laptop story.

In a Saturday Truth Social post, the former president went on to claim that Taibbi's thread proved “massive fraud,” the magnitude of which “allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.”

Olbermann responded to Trump's shocking rant with one of his own, writing, “Send a military detachment to Mar-a-Lago, seize him, detain him in a stockade or brig, and try him in a military court.”

He added that Trump's post is “an open attempt at a Revolution to overthrow the government.”

Trump has since tried to walk back his call to terminate the Constitution, lashing out at the media in yet another tirade on Truth Social. Olbermann responded with his own lengthy social media post, which included a strange video preview of the Tuesday episode of his podcast, Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

While Trump's call to terminate the very document that laid the foundation of American democracy is disturbing -- and merits appeals for accountability -- meeting those calls by suggesting a private citizen be thrown in a "stockade" is a bit extreme. It's also ridiculous to suggest Trump would be tried in military court over a social media comment.
