Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Washington Post's Taylor Lorenz and Drew Harwell

Two reporters from the Washington PostTaylor Lorenz and Drew Harwell — published a thorough report on the wild story behind the Elon Musk stalking incident, which had prompted the owner of Twitter to ban a series of reporters who cover him, raising serious questions about his commitment to free speech.

To support his confounding decision last week to suspend a Twitter user tracking his private jet — and anyone who posted its location or even linked to it — Musk blamed the trackers for a stalker who followed his child.

But the new report from Lorenz and Harwell found no link between the jet account and the stalker.

Headlined “Elon Musk blamed a Twitter account for a stalker. Police see no link,” the article reported that the alleged stalking incident occurred “at a gas station 26 miles from Los Angeles International Airport and 23 hours after the @ElonJet account had last located the jet’s whereabouts.”

As Harwell and Lorenz reported, the LAPD had “yet to find a link” between the accused stalker and @ElonJet. They identified the driver of the car as Brandon Collado, a food delivery driver who was apparently obsessed with Musk's ex Grimes.

After Lorenz sought comment from Musk on Twitter, she was promptly suspended from the platform, a bizarre move from Musk that only added fuel to the story.

A weird one all around, made more confusing by the new chief of Twitter but cleared up thanks to these two reporters.

MEDIA LOSER:
Jeremy Clarkson

The famed host of Top Gun found himself in scalding water this week after making a shockingly ill-advised comment about Megan Markle in an op-ed for The Sun.

In the piece, a condemnation of the new Netflix documentary from Markle and her husband Prince Harry, Clarkson declared he hates the Duchess of Sussex “on a cellular level,” and “everyone who’s my age thinks the same way.”

He proceeded to offer a fantasy where he imagined Markle being publicly shamed like Cersei Lannister was shamed in Game of Thrones.

“At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowd chants ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her,” Clarkson wrote.

Those comments have been condemned by thousands who complained to the UK's standards organization. London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned Clarkson’s comments as “dangerous and inexcusable.”

He even drew heat from his daughter, Emily Clarkson, who said “I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything my dad wrote about Meghan Markle.”

Clarkson issued a statement acknowledging his Game of Thrones reference was “clumsy,” and he was “horrified to have caused so much hurt.”

He also asked The Sun to delete the entire column from its website, and the tabloid obliged. Rough day for this bloke.
