Where NOLA Eats

Welcome back, New Orleans food lovers! This week, Ian McNulty takes us behind the scenes at the ultra-luxe new lounge in Caesars Casino, Octavia. The spellbinding restaurant Tatlo on Bourbon Street has the tagline "for the bewitched and hex-curious": We find out why. Learn which restaurants will take part in October's James Beard tasting event. The popular National Fried Chicken Festival has announced its lineup of food vendors. Speaking of that Southern delicacy, there's still time to participate in our readers' poll of favorite New Orleans fried chicken spots. Finally, Liz Williams has a simple but impressive menu to inspire your next dinner party, with recipes for easy chicken piccata, potatoes Anna and garlicky spinach.

1. Wanted: Big spenders.

Caesars' Casino in New Orleans has raised the curtain on its new lounge, Octavia, an Art Deco-inspired showpiece in the center of the casino, and adjacent to the luxury restauran Nobu. Ian has all the over-the-top details.

2. Witch way?

A self-described “witchy” restaurant with a speakeasy feel on Bourbon Street has all the makings of shtick. But Tatlo is no theme restaurant. Meet chef Christina Quackenbush.

3. Wait! There's more.

Sample the flavors of 20-plus top restaurants at an upcoming James Beard tasting event in New Orleans. The National Fried Chicken Festival in October releases a tempting menu of food vendors. And time is running out to take part in our totally unscientific readers' poll for the city's best fried chicken.

4. Spiral-bound.

Concentrically arranged slices of potatoes give Liz Williams' fancy pommes Anna recipe its visual punch. She serves it alongside a simple chicken piccata dish and garlic spinach to impress guests or family. Read Liz's recipes here.

The Must Read

At a late-night French Quarter restaurant the dishes are spells and the spirit is 'witchy'

I walked through the open doors from Bourbon Street into the Old Absinthe House on a Friday afternoon as people were revving up, knocking back beers and plugging away at the jukebox. But in the corner, an unmarked door with a small, grated window gave a peephole view into something quite different brewing in the dark space on the other side of the wall. Read more

What to cook

Easy chicken piccata, fancy potatoes Anna and garlic spinach to impress the dinner guests

Late September brings the promise of fall. We can leave the summer doldrums behind us and look forward to a bit more cooking. And maybe it’s time to have friends over for dinner, perhaps outside on the back porch or around a table on the lawn. Read more
