The Senate has confirmed lawyer Eugene Scalia, son of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, to serve as the next US labor secretary. The confirmation was on a 53-44 party-line vote, with Republicans touting his experience in labor law and Democrats saying he had fought against workers on behalf of his corporate clients.

California Assembly Bill 5, which constrains employers from classifying workers as independent contractors, will affect many freelance journalists, including writers, editors, photographers and cartoonists. The law allows these workers just 35 content submissions per year, which some publishers have found restrictive, causing them to end relationships with freelancers based in California.

BLS data: Millennials earning more than Gen Xers
Millennials are out-earning members of Generation X, with 10% of millennials reporting they earn $100,000 per year, compared with 9% of their Gen X peers in the same income bracket, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Among those earning $500,000 per year, 3% are millennials and 1% are Gen Xers.
