California grid now boasts 5,600 MW of battery storage

Energy storage is booming in California. Installations of lithium-ion based energy storage technology grew 10-fold from 2020 to 2023, according to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). New rules are in place to ensure those batteries are fully charged when they are needed. Last summer, they proved their worth when California experienced a heat wave that lasted 10 days straight.
