Good morning, folks. This is the Saints Insider newsletter for Tuesday, July 23, which brings us to the eve of training camp. So fire up Phantom Planet — best known for "The OC" theme — because we're headed to Southern California. The Saints' veterans report to Irvine today and the first practice starts Wednesday. Until then, we've got plenty to keep you covered: A new DA? This is a bit of a self-plug here, but I did a in-depth profile on Dennis Allen entering his third year of coaching the Saints. "I want everybody in the building to feel that this year is different," Allen told me. And we talked about how he's gone about trying to instill that — from hiring a new offensive staff to holding some sort of competition before the team's morning meetings. Those competitions include playing "Family Feud," a punt-catching competition between the offensive and defensive lines, go-kart races and much more. The details are pretty fun, so please check it out. Training camp guideOur Luke Johnson wrote a very-handy training camp guide, which includes the latest on Alvin Kamara's contract situation, the upcoming roster battles and the need-to-know new faces on the roster. Here's what Luke wrote about the wide receiver competition: A clear gap exists between the top two wideouts and the rest of the roster, but separating the others competing for a spot has proven difficult. This training camp won’t just be about their ability as pass catchers — which, undoubtedly, is an area where Perry thrives. Roster spots will be won, and potentially lost, on their ability to block in the run game and contribute on special teams. Position previewsIf you haven't read any of our position previews — and the major questions surrounding them — now is as good of a time as any to catch up. Here were our burning questions for each group: Can Derek Carr stay healthy? And who replaces him if he doesn’t? (quarterback) Can Alvin Kamara still be a star in this new offense? Will we even find out? (running backs) How much will the Saints miss Michael Thomas? And who will fill his void? (wide receivers) Is Juwan Johnson’s foot injury a major concern for this offense right now? (tight ends) How much do the Saints actually trust Trevor Penning? (tackles) Can Nick Saldiveri hold down the starting left guard job? And if not him, then who? (interior offensive line) Can Cam Jordan return to form, and how much does he have left? (defensive ends) Can the defensive tackles help restore a once-proud rushing defense? What's in store for Pete Werner this season? (linebackers) Should the Saints add any of the big-named safeties that are still available? Can Marshon Lattimore stay healthy and reclaim his reputation? (cornerbacks) Can the Saints’ incumbent kickers hold onto their jobs? (specialists) Anyway, that's all for now. Luke and I will be in California for all of camp, so stay tuned for the fun. Take care, Matthew Paras |
