The Fogarty Center for Global Health Studies (CGHS), in association with the NIH Climate Change and Health Initiative, is pleased to announce a call for proposals for a collection of case studies on adaptation strategies that respond to the impact of climate change on public health.

This call is open to researchers, practitioners, and implementers from any country, especially low- and middle-income countries.

Lessons from the field: Case studies to advance research on climate adaptation strategies and their impact on public health

Climate change poses threats to human health across a wide range of illnesses and injuries. Under-resourced and marginalized populations, especially those in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), are at higher risk of climate change consequences. A variety of climate change adaptation strategies have been and continue to be developed to prepare for, and adjust to, both the current and projected impacts of climate change. While many climate adaptation strategies are being developed and deployed globally, few directly address health outcomes. Furthermore, the scientific evidence base for many of these strategies is limited, particularly regarding their impact on health.

As such, we are excited to launch this call for proposals for case studies that address current gaps in climate science literature regarding the impact of climate change adaptation on health. We anticipate that this collection of case examples will help to identify and understand how adaptation strategies can be harnessed to address deteriorating health outcomes resulting from climate change.

This call is open to researchers, practitioners, and implementers from any country, especially LMICs. Applicants will submit two-page proposals to be reviewed by a steering committee of global experts. Based on this review, a diverse set of 8-12 proposals will be selected to develop into full case studies for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Limited financial support is available and all publication costs and open access fees will be covered by NIH.
