The Story

Lawmakers might finally be doing something about ticket prices.

I’m all ears.

This week, the House passed the TICKET Act in an effort to increase price transparency. The bill would require sellers to list the full price of tickets and provide full refunds if an event is canceled. This comes as the ticketing practices of large businesses, like Ticketmaster, have come under scrutiny. Still, it remains to be seen whether the changes go through in time for the summer concert series.

What do you mean?

It’s unclear when the Senate will take up the bill, as the upper chamber has its own measure tackling ticket sales. Meanwhile, Live Nation and advocacy groups commended the House bill’s passage and urged the Senate to do the same. It comes as many fans are still trying to forget the Ticketmaster fiasco involving Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which spurred a lawsuit and a congressional hearing. Bad Bunny and Beyoncé fans have also faced their own set of hurdles.

Lawmakers have been promising to crack down on companies like Ticketmaster. As Congress takes steps in that direction, people are hoping the changes will be music to their ears.

And Also...This

Where things got heated...

Former President Trump’s trial. One of the most dramatic days in court unfolded yesterday as Trump’s lawyers grilled the prosecution’s star witness, Michael Cohen. Reminder: Cohen is Trump’s ex-fixer and the one who allegedly paid the hush money to adult-film star Stormy Daniels. Over the course of several hours, the defense tried to undermine Cohen’s credibility by pressing him on the times he lied under oath and accusing him of seeking revenge against his former boss. Trump’s lawyer shouted that Cohen’s testimony was “a lie,” sharing evidence that a phone call about Daniels didn’t happen. During questioning, Cohen admitted he’s lied in previous trials. His testimony resumes on Monday and closing arguments could begin the following day.

...Oh and speaking of politics,President Biden invoked executive privilege yesterday. The move blocks Republican House committees from accessing Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur and protects Attorney General Merrick Garland from any criminal exposure.

What people are looking into…

Birth control.A New York Times analysis found that the number of birth controlprescriptions in the US has gradually increased. That’s despite women on social media vowing to quit the pill. The analysis comes amid a larger national conversation about access to reproductive health and abortion bans. The data also shows that the nine states with the strictest abortion restrictions saw more women seeking out birth control.

What achieved a milestone…

The stock market.Yesterday, the Dow briefly passed 40,000 points for the first time in history. The Dow consists of 30 companies, representing a small portion of Corporate America. The record apparently doesn’t do much for Americans’ 401(k) accounts, since most of them aren’t tied to the Dow.
