Camellia bridge got built despite financial, political headwinds, changed south Lafayette landscape

by Adam Daigle | Acadiana business editor

Good morning, Acadiana business news readers. It's business news time. Let's dive in.

It kind of all started when the Ambassador Caffery Parkway bridge over the Vermilion River was shut down for repairs one Christmas season, and traffic blew up. The problem? It was the early 1980s, and the Camellia Boulevard bridge — or Camellia Boulevard, for that matter — did not exist.

It took 20 years for the issue to be fully remedied. This fall will mark 20 years since the Camellia Boulevard bridge opened to traffic , and let's revisit the effort that got it there: the home buyouts, the meetings over what was referred to as Camellia Boulevard extension and the commercial development that followed.

You can read the full story here.

It's part of out 200 for 200 series on the 200th birthday of Lafayette Parish. You can read more historical stories that celebrate the people, places, history and heritage of Lafayette Parish by clicking here.

Have a great day and thanks for reading.
