Can A.I. Help Us Communicate with Animals?

“The world is awash in meaning and signal that we are just unaware of,” says machine learning expert Aza Raskin. “A.I. throws open the aperture of what we can perceive.” A.I. can find meaningful patterns in otherwise unintelligible noise, so scientists are starting to wonder: Can it help humans interpret animal sounds? This conversation from the 2023 Aspen Ideas Festival was a collaboration with Vox’s “Unexplainable” podcast. The host of “Unexplainable,” Noam Hassenfeld, interviewed Raskin and researcher Karen Bakker. The two experts on animal communication and the digital world came together to challenge assumptions about nonhuman language, explain how A.I. might enable interspecies communication, and ponder what these discoveries could mean for conservation efforts.

In this talk from the 2018 Aspen Ideas Festival, researchers Alexandra Horowitz and Brian Hare sat down with The Atlantic’s Ross Andersen to explain the science behind our favorite pet behaviors like tail wags, puppy-dog eyes, and sniffs out the window.
