Quick Tip

Find common ground in compliance codes

A compliance code describes how the hospital intends to comply with laws and regulations by establishing requirements its staff must follow in their course of work. The hospital administrator or a dedicated compliance officer typically oversees the compliance code and relevant program.

Telecommuting MSPs: Strategies for a successful alternative worksite program
Published 5/17/17

I’ll admit I was skeptical when first asked to lead a team of nearly 50 full-time employees who work from home. For 30 years, I had worked in an office where all members of my team sat in the same vicinity. The close quarters allowed me to swing by a person’s desk for information or discussion and to physically oversee daily operations. Now, I was faced with the challenge of managing dozens of individuals scattered throughout four states!
CVO employee newsletter

When credentialing/medical staff services team members are scattered across multiple locations, distributing an e-newsletter can keep communication flowing and provide information about important department developments, including regulatory or medical staff–driven revisions to credentialing requirements, process improvements, and staffing changes. This sample e-newsletter issue comes courtesy of Banner Health CVO in Phoenix.
CVO employee recognition program summary

Staff engagement is key to retaining talent and boosting productivity. Leaders at Banner Health CVO in Phoenix have engaged a team of nearly 50 remote employees by inviting them to be part of performance improvement efforts, asking for their feedback, and encouraging their professional development. A prime example of this initiative is the employee-led creation and implementation of a department recognition program, summarized here. The individuals on the development team introduced a fun, effective way to recognize each other and to be recognized by leaders.
CVO remote work guidelines
Published 5/17/17

A telecommuting model requires policies and guidelines for staff and leaders so expectations can be communicated and enforced. For example, Phoenix-based Banner Health's alternative worksite policy requires employees to have a dedicated work space in their homes and a reliable high-speed internet connection. In addition to Banner’s companywide telecommuting policy, its CVO has set forth expectations regarding work schedules (featured here), availability, training, and participation in department meetings.
Assessing the competence of APPs
Published 5/15/17

Although the goals of competency assessment are the same for advanced practice professionals (APP) and physicians, the way in which the medical staff goes about it may differ. The medical staff should work with APPs to develop the process, which may include defining specific quality indicators and deciding how to collect data on an ongoing basis.
Allied health professional competency evaluation
Published 5/15/17

Many advanced practice professional (APP) disciplines may be evaluated utilizing the same quality indicators as their physician counterparts (e.g., certified registered nurse anesthetist and anesthesiologist; certified nurse midwife and OB-GYN) and by utilizing the same review forms that are used for physician review.
