Already this morning, students in South Africa marched and sang; students in Samoa paddled a river in their walkout, people thronged to protests in Melbourne, Islamabad, Glasgow, Bucharest, Athens—150 countries, according to www.globalclimatestrike.net.

Young people know we failed them. They know they have to do what we couldn't muster the will to do. I don't mean people in my generation didn't try, but the evidence is plain before us, in the funeral held for Iceland's Okjökull glacier, in the hottest July on record, in hurricanes and wildfires that behave as they never have before.
