Can the Saints just be normal this year?

Good morning and welcome to the July 25 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter, and happy 2023 New Orleans Saints Training Camp Eve to all those who celebrate.

Can things just be normal?

I mean, seriously. For all of our sakes — for the players, for the fans, and especially for us poor beat writers — can the Saints just endure a normal amount of injuries for once?

For two straight years, the Saints have not only dealt with a lot of injuries (or, you know, bizarre circumstances), but the injuries have robbed them of some of their best, most important players for big stretches of time.

In the alternate universe where Michael Thomas doesn't miss 40 out of 50 games or the Saints aren't forced to start five quarterbacks in a span of 34 games, we're probably talking about this team differently. Unfortunately for the Saints, alternate universes are still theoretical.

Still, it feels like the Saints have dealt with more than their fair share. Which sets us up for today's big question: Forget regression toward the mean, can the Saints actually progress toward it?

It's not just injuries. The Saints have had some fluky things working against them in recent seasons, and some of that stuff is bound to bounce in their direction at some point.

Seeking: Difference makers

The Saints made a splash this offseason with a quarterback. They have established stars at key positions. Those are important pieces to have.

But who are the players on the roster who might just provide that extra oomph between a win and a loss on some random Sunday this fall?

I took a look at four of them here, starting with a guy who the team believes could've propelled the team to the playoffs last season if he was on the field.

Welcome back, 97

The Saints are the latest organization to really dive into the Y2K trend.

New Orleans welcomed back one of its all-time greats for this year's training camp, as La'Roi Glover will join the team's coaching staff as its Bill Walsh Diversity Fellow. Jahri Evans held down one of those spots last year, and now he's a full-fledged member of the coaching staff.

Glover was a monster in his heydey, averaging 10 sacks per year from the defensive interior during his five-year run in a Saints uniform, including a 17-sack performance in 2000. Jeff Duncan has the details here.

Programming note

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and coach Dennis Allen will hold a press conference Tuesday from the Saints' Airline Drive facility, officially heralding the start of a new football season. Giddy up.

There's a lot more to dive into over at nola.com this morning, so do yourself a favor and check it out, and stay locked in throughout the week while our team provides nothing but the best coverage.

Cheers,

Luke Johnson
