When he was racing in the DTM, Mika Hakkinen was often asked how a Formula 1 compared and he would answer it thus: “An F1 car is like a wild animal – it’s always trying to bite you!”

Next season, another two-time F1 champion – Fernando Alonso – returns with Alpine, the rebranded Renault team. And to ease his re-acclimatization, Renault has run him in a modified 2018 car. Remember, pre-season testing is limited to three days in 2021, so Alonso needs all the help he can get after his years away in Toyota WEC, Indy 500 bids and Dakar Rally adventure.

Alonso has also driven the 2020 car on a filming day, so expect him to hit the ground running as hard as he can when he re-enters the F1 fray.

Fernando Alonso may have quit Formula 1 at the end of 2018 in order to pursue outside interests, but he has rarely been far away from the series’ orbit.
