Good morning Valued Subscriber,
The actions of police in Tasering a "cowering" man while he sat in a car have been scrutinised by a Canberra judge who said they "had the very real appearance of being an action only to punish him". Tim Piccione reports the man was submissive, wearing a seatbelt and had his hands up when he was stunned. A startling number of ACT drivers have been found to be driving around the city unregistered. Over a period of a week in late July, Access Canberra contacted by SMS and letter about 60,000 people whose rego had lapsed urging them to quickly get their rego in order or face fines, Peter Brewer reports. The rego blitz was made possible thanks to the network of mobile phone detection, red light and speeding cameras.
The University of Canberra is making emergency cuts to try to deal with a $10 million deficit blowout. Steve Evans reports job and course cuts are on the table as the uni deals with the fallout of a dive in international student numbers. In a happier story today, Steve writes - from personal experience - about couples who remarry each other after divorce, while in Forum Dan Dixon looks at the risk Kamala Harris won't be able to convert positive "Gen Z vibe" into votes. It's a double-header for the Canberra Raiders today, with both the men's and women's team playing at home. The men's team is trying against Penrith to save face with fans after an awful loss last weekend against North Queensland. It will be a good day for the footy with a top temperature of 21 degrees after an overnight low of 6. There's a medium chance of a shower in the morning, but it should be a mostly sunny day. Enjoy your weekend.
