Have you had any conversation over the last year where the dreaded C-word hasn’t come up? Covid!
Tomorrow, Thursday 4th February, is World Cancer Day and I am asking you, for this one day, to think about the original big C – CANCER.
CANCER TAKES ONE LIFE, EVERY HOUR, OF EVERY DAY IN IRELAND SURVIVAL RATES FOR SOME CANCERS ARE STILL LESS THAN 10%
At Breakthrough Cancer Research these are not numbers we are willing to accept and, thanks to your support and that of our researchers and patients, amazing things are happening in the fight against cancer.
Breakthrough currently has 67 researchers throughout the country, isfunding research for poor prognosis cancers at 12 sites on the body, and has alreadybrought eight cancer treatments successfully to clinical trial. Our researchers and scientists are working hard on exciting developments in cell-therapy, immuno-therapy, surgery alternatives and personalised medicine which will improve survival rates and minimise side effects of current treatments.
50 years ago, breast and prostate cancer survival rates were less than 50%. Today, thanks to research, they’re now over 85% - it’s just incredible.
Cancer research has already created so many survivors, but we need to continue to find ways to shorten the time it takes to get new effective treatments to patients who are waiting for them. The anxiety we’ve felt waiting for the Covid vaccine is something patients with cancer and survivors know only too well. We urgently need to make up the time we have lost to Covid19 with lab closures, disruptions to clinical trials and difficulty accessing patient samples to test, and with public support - and hopefully government support in the future - increase the pace of research.
Covid19 has shown us the power of research. It is the only thing that will create new and more effective treatments for diseases and give back birthdays, weddings and futures.
So tomorrow, on World Cancer Day, if you can please donate.
If every adult in Ireland donated just €1 to research today, we'd raise €3.5million in 24 hours. And if everyone donated €10 an astounding €37.5million would be raised for life-saving cancer research.
Every euro donated to cancer research saved lives. Last year, with €1.3m our team at Breakthrough Cancer Research green-lit 20 new projects,1 clinical trial and helped fund 67 cancer researchers. Imagine what is possible with further funding.
Donation is not the only way you can mark World Cancer Day, you can also use your voice. Spread the word about the importance of cancer research among your friends and family.
