Good morning. Temperatures will be in the low 50s with rain throughout the state.

Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Cannabis parties are the ‘gray area’ in a green new world

  • When a dispensary opened in an old gas station in Portland last year, it was initially billed as a place for “cheap gas and great grass.” Now it’s hosting “jar takeover” parties to spotlight new strains of cannabis. There’s usually a DJ, food trucks and Q&As with cannabis caregivers. As regulations relax, some are already eyeing legal loopholes that could push the limits of the state’s complex and confusing cannabis laws.
Border Patrol questioned family in Bangor because they looked Central American and spoke Spanish
  • Two U.S. Border Patrol agents recently followed a family they saw in Bangor into the Goodwill thrift store on Stillwater Avenue. The family “appeared to be of Central-American origin,” a Border Patrol agent wrote in federal court records, and the agents “overheard several people speaking Spanish” inside the store. Then, the agents approached the people and asked where they were from.

City officials are trying to make Bangor more walkable–here’s how

  • The projects include the installation of bollards at crosswalks to keep drivers from speeding through, plans to make an intersection less confusing and the eventual addition of a crosswalk on the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge that connects Bangor and Brewer.
Maine's 'death with dignity' program is moving quickly. Here's how the rollout is going.
  • Maine became the ninth state to allow doctors to provide life-ending medication to terminally ill patients. The law took effect last month. Wide adoption will take time. Maine’s largest provider will allow physicians to participate beginning in January, but there are questions about which drugs will be used.

Why justice hasn’t been swift for a Maine man accused of killing his family

  • It’s been two years since the Rockport man was accused of brutally killing his mother, his grandparents and their home health aide in Massachusetts. Orion Krause, 24, is expected to plead not guilty by reason of insanity when his trial gets underway. But he has yet to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Do this: Hike North Traveler Mountain, one of the most difficult hikes in Baxter State Park

  • The strenuous hike is 5.6 miles, out and back, and features long stretches of steady climbing, a few steep scrambles and very uneven, rocky footing. One of the great things about North Traveler Mountain is that hikers are rewarded with amazing views early on in the hike. The first viewpoint is just 0.6 mile from the trailhead, and above that, the trail is open to the sky much of the way as it travels along a steep, rocky ridge.
