FORECAST IN DETAIL

The heat is on, at least by mid-October standards, as we head for the 80s for a third straight day. We’re slightly cooler tomorrow and more noticeably so on Friday, when some showers are likely, before fall returns in full force for the weekend.

Today (Wednesday): A solidly summerlike day, with partly to mostly sunny skies and noticeable humidity (dew points in the mid-60s). Highs head for the mid-80s, with light winds from the west-southwest around 5-10 mph. The record highs to beat for the day? — 88 at DCA, 83 at Dulles, and 82 at BWI. Confidence: High

Tonight: With increasing clouds and those higher humidity levels, we stay mild through the evening and overnight. Lows settle in the 60s with light winds. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Thursday): Can’t rule out a brief morning shower. Otherwise partly to mostly cloudy skies and a cooler wind from the southeast, around 10-15 mph, hold temperatures down a bit. Highs should still reach the upper 70s to low 80s though, and still with a bit of a muggy feel. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: We’ll stay partly to mostly cloudy as a cold front approaches from the west, with about a 30 percent chance it gets close enough to spread a few showers our way. Lows drop back to the low-to-mid 60s. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Friday features mostly cloudy skies and probably some showers as a cold front comes through, although the timing of those showers remains uncertain. Highs are noticeably cooler, in the 60s to near 70. Shower chances diminish by Friday evening or overnight, as winds pick up and lows dip to the mid-40s to low 50s. Confidence: Low-Medium

Back to fall this weekend, starting with a windy and much cooler Saturday, with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s under partly to mostly sunny skies. We’re fairly chilly Saturday night with lows near 40 to the mid-40s. Still breezy on Sunday, though winds should gradually diminish, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 60 to the mid-60s. Confidence: Medium
