FORECAST IN DETAIL

First this week comes the rain and then, perhaps, the hottest weather of the season.

Today into tonight, a front draped over the region draws in a deep supply of moisture from the south and west setting the stage for a good deal of rain. This stream of moisture keeps flowing through at least the first half of Tuesday, before departing at night.

Between Wednesday and Sunday, heat and humidity build, and we won’t be able to rule out some late day storms.

Today (Monday): Scattered showers develop this morning. Then rain increases in coverage and intensity during the midday and afternoon hours and may be heavy at times with some thunder. The dense cloud cover holds high temperatures to the mid-70s – more than ten degrees below normal. Over an inch of rain could fall. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms are likely. However, some of our modeling suggests a break from the rain for a time during the evening, which could open a window for fireworks and other outdoor activities (50-50 chance). Overnight temperatures don’t fall off much, only into the low 70s or so. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Rain and thunderstorms are possible, especially in the morning. The sun may come out in the afternoon and it’s much warmer with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s. Even so, widely scattered showers and storms remain possible (40 percent) into the evening. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Any lingering showers and storms should quickly diminish after sunset. It’s partly cloudy with lows in the upper 60s and low 70s. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

The period Wednesday through Sunday could be the hottest of summer. However, just how hot it gets is still an open question. Some models say highs will hover closer to 90 (which is not far off normal), while some suggest we could approach the mid-to-upper 90s or even 100 by Saturday. Irrespective of exactly how hot it is, humidity should be high and, given a moist, unstable atmosphere, late day storms will be a looming possibility, especially Thursday and Friday. Confidence: Low-Medium
