FORECAST IN DETAIL

It’s spooky: No matter how deep into fall we get, 80-degree summerlike weather keeps coming back at us. Until Sunday, we thought the record-setting warm spell in the middle of the month was the end of it. But after a brief cool down today, a warming trend begins Tuesday that could climax with another 80-degree day Thursday. After a cool front brings showers into the region late Thursday or Thursday night, temperatures return to near normal through next weekend, which will probably be dry.

Today (Halloween): This weather is nothing frightening, but it is more fitting for fall than Sunday’s 80-degree weather. A breeze from the north (at around 10 mph) draws in seasonably cool air. Despite lots of sunshine, highs range from 60 to 65. Confidence: High

Tonight: It’s clear, calm and crisp — a perfect evening for trick-or-treaters. Evening temperatures steadily drop back through the 50s so be sure your young ones have a warm layer underneath their costumes. Overnight lows range from the mid-to-upper 30s in our colder suburbs to the mid-40s downtown. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): The day begins on the cold side, with patchy frost in our colder areas. But, with sunshine in earnest, the afternoon should be delightful — as highs climb into the mid-60s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Because the prevailing wind direction starts to come in from the south, it is not as cold as the previous night. Lows range from the mid-40s in our cooler spots to the low 50s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Wednesday is my pick of the week for the best weather. We’ll have a good deal of sunshine, a gentle breeze from the south and unbeatable high temperatures ranging from 70 to 75. A great evening follows as temperatures fall back into the 60s and ultimately bottom out in the mild 50s early Thursday morning. Confidence: ??????

Thursday is likely the warmest day of the week, as southerly breezes really pump in the summerlike air. If we see a good deal of sunshine, we could hit 80 — which is the record for the date. But a cold front will be approaching the region with clouds and showers and will probably arrive late in the day or in the evening. If it comes in a bit sooner, highs would hold in the 70s. After some evening showers, it turns cooler overnight with lows 45-50. Confidence: Medium

The period Friday through Sunday, right now, looks fantastic. We should have mostly sunny, mild days and cool, clear nights. Highs should generally range from 60 to 65, with lows mostly in the 40s except 35-40 in our colder locations. Confidence: Medium
