FORECAST IN DETAIL

Ah, fall, with its dry air masses and shorter days. This means temperatures markedly respond higher as the sun rises, and dip quickly after sunset. Dress in layers! Might we also squeeze out some needed showers later tomorrow or tomorrow night?

Today (Sunday): After a freeze in many spots, chilly morning temperatures slowly rise through the 30s and 40s (bundle up if out early!). Mostly sunny skies dominate, boosting highs to near 60 to the low 60s. Note our air mass continues to be very dry (dew points in the 20s). Be sure to drink extra water if exercising outside, and don’t be surprised if you start reaching for the lip or skin moisturizer. Breezes from the southwest are light, around 5-10 mph. Confidence: High

Tonight: You shouldn’t have much of a problem viewing the supermoon! Temperatures bottom out just before dawn, ranging from near 30 in the coolest suburbs to near 40 downtown. Widely ranging temperatures like this are common when winds become calm and skies stay predominately clear. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Monday): Skies should start with some sun, but clouds probably increase late morning into the afternoon. Highs should still manage at least the mid-50s, perhaps near 60 with enough sun. We do have a 30% chance of some light showers mid-to-late afternoon. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Shower chances increase to 50% during the evening and overnight (we could really use some rain!). Clouds remain fairly numerous, even toward dawn, keeping low temperatures from getting much below the 40-degree mark, maybe hovering in the low-to-mid 40s inside the Beltway. Confidence: Low-Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Highs make a run at the upper 50s to low 60s for Tuesday. While we could have some clouds and a chance (40%) of morning rain, at least skies have the potential to clear a bit as we get into late afternoon. Tuesday night lows range from the upper 30s outside the Beltway to the mid-40s downtown. Confidence: Medium

Wednesday. is looking rain-free and sunnier with highs near 60 to the low 60s, which puts us back above average again. Stay tuned for small forecast tweaks as needed, once we get closer to midweek. Confidence: Low-Medium
