FORECAST IN DETAIL

We haven’t had a whole lot of winter this year, but this week offers a dose. Some blustery snow showers may zip through the region today. For the remainder of the week, until Sunday, we won’t see much in the way of precipitation – save a snow flurry here or there – but it will be cold with highs mostly in the 30s to near 40 and lows in the 20s. Sunday could bring a wintry mix, but confidence is low.

Today (Monday): The heaviest snow is exiting the area just in time for the commute, but the eastern suburbs may have some visibility issues in the 5 a.m. hour. Roads appear to be okay in the Beltway, but watch out for slippery areas. It looks like the immediate metro got a good coating of pasty, wet snow, while areas to the south got a bit more. Stafford County appears to be the winner with 2 inches as of 5 a.m.

Flurries are possible this morning, even after the heaviest snow moves out, then skies partially clear for a time. But clouds build back up during the afternoon and some snow showers and flurries may zip by. Temperatures should mainly be above freezing but could fall back a bit in any heavier snow showers, which could coat the ground and reduce visibility. Highs range from the mid-30s to near 40, but feel colder factoring in winds from the northwest at 10-15 mph, gusting over 20 mph at times. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: A partly cloudy and cold winter’s night. Lows range from the low 20s in our colder suburbs to the mid-to-upper 20s downtown and there’s a bit of a breeze. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Skies become mostly cloudy in the morning and a snow shower or flurry can’t be ruled out, mainly in our northern and northwestern areas. We may see a bit more sunshine during the afternoon, with highs in the mid-to-upper 40s. Winds come in from the south at 10-20 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy and uneventful. Lows range from the low 30s in our colder areas to the upper 30s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

A cold front sweeps through the region Wednesday, but temperatures bounce back well into the 40s before chilly air spills in behind it. A brief rain or snow shower is possible Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night, when lows fall back to 25-30. Confidence: Medium

Cold air becomes firmly established over the region Thursday through Saturday. Under partly cloudy skies, highs each day range from 35-40 with overnight lows in the 20s. Confidence: Medium

Clouds increase Sunday and we could see some mixed precipitation during the second half of the day, but models don’t agree on whether storminess will develop. Highs will probably hold in the 30s for another day. Confidence: Low-Medium

SNOW POTENTIAL INDEX
A daily assessment of the potential for at least 1 inch of snow in the next week, on a 0-10 scale.

1/10 (↓): Just some spotty snow showers the next few days. Sunday could bring some wintry precipitation, but it’s highly uncertain.
