FORECAST IN DETAIL

It’s the time of year when the weather can play havoc with preholiday plans. This time, though, calm conditions look to prevail across the vast majority of the nation, with no significant winter storms on the immediate horizon. Locally, we’ll see comfortable temperatures over the next several days, with perhaps a few rain showers this weekend.

Today (Wednesday): Morning 20s and 30s are appropriately chilly on this first day of winter. But as the day progresses, a breeze from the west-southwest gives temperatures a bit of a boost. Afternoon highs reach the mid- to upper 40s under partly sunny skies, with light winds, around 5-10 mph. Confidence: High

Tonight: Partly cloudy evening skies may turn mostly cloudy overnight. Meanwhile, a light wind from the south helps us stay a bit warmer than during recent nights, with lows settling near 30 to the mid-30s. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Thursday): A weak cold front doesn’t do much besides kicking up a bit of an afternoon breeze from the northwest. Temperatures remain on the mild side, rising toward highs in the upper 40s to low 50s with partly cloudy skies. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: It will be continued partly cloudy and not overly chilly for the latter part of December. Lows bottom in the mid-20s to low 30s with light winds from the northwest. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

High pressure is in control on Friday. That means mostly sunny skies and highs from the mid-40s to near 50. Clouds increase Friday night with lows in the 30s, and we can’t rule out a shower toward morning. Confidence: Medium

Not perfect, but not a bad Christmas weekend, the way things look now. We could see a few rain showers Saturday and maybe a passing shower Sunday or Monday. Saturday’s and Sunday’s highs should reach the upper 40s to low 50s with partly to mostly cloudy skies, while Monday looks warmer, with highs in the 50s to near 60. Nighttime lows aren’t too chilly, ranging from the 30s to low 40s. Confidence: Medium
