FORECAST IN DETAIL

January: Part Deux continues today, completing our coldest weekend since early January. I guess penance was in order for our 70s and 80s in February! The cold air doesn’t stick around long, though, as we start to warm back up during the workweek. Trouble is, we may be dodging raindrops as we do.

Today (Sunday): A mostly clear sky full of sun allows temperatures to quickly rise today. However, they’re rising from frigid overnight lows in the teens to near 20, so even a 25-degree rise or so only gets us to the low-to-mid 40s for highs. If there’s good news to be had, the gusty winds from yesterday are gone, so standing out in the sun may not feel so bad by afternoon. Confidence: High

Tonight: Mostly clear skies allow temperatures to plummet once again. They don’t manage to get quite as cold as last night, thanks to a light wind from the south. Still, overnight lows range from near 20 in the coldest suburbs to near 30 downtown. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Monday): By tomorrow, high pressure slides to our southeast, and that means warmer temperatures for us. With light winds continuing from the south, highs reach the mid-50s to near 60, even with the potential for increasing clouds as the leading edge of a warm front approaches. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Skies are on the mostly cloudy side with that warm front nearby. A batch of light showers is possible overnight or toward morning (30% chance), though it may largely veer to our north and west. Temperatures don’t fall much overnight, only reaching lows in the mid-to-upper 40s. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Any early showers (30% chance) on Tuesday should clear out by midmorning, and we should see a mainly dry period through midafternoon despite mostly cloudy skies. Afternoon highs climb into the 60s with a chance of showers toward evening. Scattered light-to-moderate showers are likely Tuesday night as a cold front crosses the region, with lows dipping to the 40s to near 50. Confidence: Medium

Showers should clear out by the time we wake up Wednesday morning. Colder air lags well behind the front, so we’ll stay on the mild side with highs reaching the upper 50s to low 60s. What we will deal with, however, is winds gusting near or past 30 mph. Confidence: Medium
