FORECAST IN DETAIL

We steadily slip into a winter chill this weekend. But as has been the case so frequently this season, another potent warm-up quickly follows next week. Super Bowl Sunday looks like a good day to settle in with the chips, beverages, etc., and avoid afternoon rain and wet snow showers.

Today (Thursday): The sun is likely to greet the early risers (groundhogs included) with just occasional patches of clouds. Breezes pick up from the west (gusting over 20 mph at times) making highs in the mid-40s less than pleasant. Confidence: High

Tonight: The skies remain partly cloudy through the night with breezes from the west gradually easing. This makes those lows ranging through the 20s a little less painful. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Friday): Clouds are more persistent until late in the day when sunshine starts getting the upper hand. Brisk winds out of the northwest are attention-getting as highs only manage the upper 30s to lower 40s. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Stars are obscured through much of the night as clouds are slow to dissipate until dawn, but winds do finally die down. Overnight lows are chilly, ranging from the upper teens to lower 20s in the suburbs and only mid-20s downtown. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Saturday looks great from indoors with sunny skies and calm winds. The problem is Arctic air has infiltrated, and highs only manage the mid-to-upper 30s. Overnight lows fall to the upper teens in the coldest spots, but most of the area holds in the 20s. Confidence: High

South winds kick in on Sunday. This allows a meager temperature improvement, but increasing clouds and a few afternoon rain or wet snow showers spoil any real warming. Highs settle in the low 40s. The clouds do help overnight with lows only falling to the low-to-mid 30s. Confidence: Medium

Monday clears out, but highs remain mostly in the low-to-mid 40s. Confidence: Medium-High
