FORECAST IN DETAIL

Hurricane Matthew’s menacing weather looks  to be contained well to the south of us. Still, after a fine day today, the hurricane manages to feed enough moisture our way to interact with a weak cold front and set off some showers late tomorrow into Saturday. This could cause some disruptions for the Nationals playoff games Friday/Saturday but a washout is very unlikely. Columbus Day is another winner for those lucky enough to have the day off.

Today (Thursday): Patchy fog is a possibility in the early morning in some areas as winds are nearly calm. Sunshine should quickly burn the fog away and by afternoon skies are partly to mostly sunny. Highs reach the low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: High

Tonight: A cloudless evening affords a fine view of the crescent moon and Saturn paired up on the southwest horizon. Breezes remain minimal and clouds come sneaking back in late.  Lows range through the 50s. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Friday): Clouds are on the increase throughout the day as tropical moisture from Hurricane Matthew feeds into the area despite its location off the Florida coast. Highs still manage to reach the upper 60s to lower 70s. There is only a very slight chance for showers late in the day. Breezes are minimal. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Shower chances increase late at night as an approaching cold front latches on to the tropical moisture inflow. Breezes pick up from the east. Lows hold in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Saturday is likely to produce at least some scattered showers in much of the area and northeasterly breezes accelerate as Matthew edges up the Carolina’s coast. Fortunately this should be as close as it gets. There is still the chance for a few heavier rain squalls in the southern Delmarva later in the day but unless the track changes dramatically, damaging winds and flooding should be avoided. Highs only reach the mid-to-upper 60s. Showers diminish overnight and lows fall to the low-to-mid 50s giving a bit of a chill as northwest winds are brisk. Confidence: Medium

As long as Matthew pulls away on Sunday skies should clear in the morning. It is still likely to be fairly breezy behind the cold front. Temps climb slowly with highs in the low-to-mid 60s. Overnight lows turn chilly with 40s in the suburbs and near 50 downtown. Confidence: Low to medium

Columbus Day (Monday) is another fantastic fall day with calming winds, mainly clear skies and highs mainly in the mid-60s. Confidence: Medium
