FORECAST IN DETAIL

After yesterday’s brutal grilling, the prospect of continued 90s through the rest of this week is not comforting. But we can at least offer slightly less heat and humidity in the coming days thanks to a weak frontal system. Clouds increase and scattered thunderstorms remain possible in the afternoons, which could offer some relief, too. The weekend is looking better for temperatures — maybe just 80s? — but it might also get cloudier and wetter.

Today (Tuesday): Skies are partly cloudy for most of the day, but don’t be surprised to see overcast periods. Both humidity and temperatures drop slightly from Monday with highs in the middle 90s and dew points slightly lower than yesterday. Nevertheless, heat indices are still quite hot. Afternoon thunderstorm chances are mainly for the southern half of the region the potential for heavy downpours. Winds are from the northwest at around 5 mph, but gusty in thunderstorms. Tomorrow (Wednesday): Partly sunny with highs in the low to middle 90s in the afternoon. Scattered showers and storms are possible throughout the day, with the highest chances south of the District. Winds are light from the north. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy, a bit muggier, and we can’t rule out the chance of a roving overnight thunderstorm as a weak frontal system heads back northward again. Lows range through the 70s. Confidence: Medium-high

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday brings back a bit more heat and humidity with moderate to high dew points along with highs the middle 90s. The one saving grace is a higher chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon throughout the area that could curtail the peak heat. Some storms could deliver some heavy downpours in this tropical air mass. Scattered thunderstorms continue Thursday night with lows in the 70s again. Confidence: Medium

Friday looks hot and muggy again with highs in the low to middle 90s. We run the chance for some more thunderstorms depending on the location of a lifting frontal boundary. Friday night looks warm and humid again with lows in the 70s and a few showers or storms possible. Confidence: Medium

The weekend may not be quite as hot, but it may come at the price of more showers and storms. We’ll aim for partly cloudy skies, daily (and nightly) chances of showers and storms with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s. Humidity remains moderately uncomfortable still. Lows Saturday night should be in the 70s, but some outer suburbs may manage some upper 60s. Confidence: Low-medium
