FORECAST IN DETAIL

We trade the wind for thickening clouds today as a weak system slowly approaches. Still, we’re mainly dry during the daytime with near-normal temperatures, so it’s literally about as good as can be expected this time of year. Speaking of early December, some spots could see a brief touch of wintry mix tonight before mainly rain, with more rain likely on Tuesday.

Today (Sunday): Clouds begin to build in early thanks to moisture moving in at the mid-levels of the atmosphere, and thicken throughout the afternoon. The mostly cloudy skies help limit highs to around 45-50, but we do get a break from the wind, which is light and variable in direction. Though we can’t rule out a stray sprinkle or shower, precipitation should generally hold off until after dark. Confidence: High

Tonight: Showers likely overspread the area from the west-southwest after around 7-8 p.m. The showers may mix with some sleet and/or snow during the evening, but with temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s no accumulation is expected. Any mixed precipitation should turn over to all rain overnight. A few areas of fog are also possible, as lows range from the mid-30s to near 40. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Monday): High pressure briefly builds into the region on Monday ahead of our next system. Overnight showers should move out by around 5-6 a.m., and while clouds may linger through much of the morning, skies should brighten to at least partly sunny by afternoon. Winds are generally light out of the northwest, and temperatures tick up a bit, with highs reaching the upper 40s to mid-50s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Clouds are on the increase again as we get later in the evening and into the overnight, as an area of low pressure starts heading our way from the Gulf Coast. Most of the night should be dry, but shower chances start to increase toward morning, with a touch of wintry mix possible north and west. Patchy fog is possible once again, with lows likely above freezing in the mid-to-upper 30s. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Prepare yourself for a fairly dreary Tuesday. Rain becomes likely by mid-morning, perhaps mixing with a bit of sleet and/or snow at the onset in our far north and west suburbs. The rain could fall consistently through the day, with highs only near 40 to the mid-40s, and into the evening before winding down overnight. Skies stay cloudy Tuesday night as lows dip to the upper 30s to low 40s. Confidence: Medium

A few showers may still linger into Wednesday morning, but we’re on a drying trend by afternoon. Clouds may be slow to clear, but some afternoon brightening tries to boost highs to near 50. Confidence: Medium
