FORECAST IN DETAIL

After five straight days of highs in the low-to-mid 90s, our heat wave comes to an end today. It’s not an overly dramatic shift. But it is a little cooler and noticeably less humid with a bit of a breeze, which spells out a pretty nice Sunday for the area. Monday is much the same, before we start to feel more typically summery, with a touch more heat and increasing humidity. Our next shot at some showers and storms comes toward midweek.

Today (Sunday): Three things of note today: lower humidity, increasing wind, and slightly cooler temperatures. High pressure squeezes in, sending dew points down to the more comfortable low 60s and upper 50s. Temperatures are still on the warm side, reaching the mid-80s to near 90, but with a nice breeze from the northwest gusting past 20 mph at times. Skies start mostly sunny, perhaps turning partly cloudy during the afternoon. Confidence: High

Tonight: If you’re in the suburbs, you may be able to sleep with the windows open. Closer to town, though, it’s still on the warm side. After maybe a few evening clouds, skies trend mostly clear as lows fall to the mid-60s to around 70 with light winds. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Monday): It’s more of the same to start the new work week. Mostly sunny skies prevail, with afternoon highs reaching the mid-to-upper 80s, and humidity still not too high. A wind from the north early shifts to come from the south later in the afternoon, but remains generally light around 5 mph. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: A more summery feel starts to return during the evening and especially overnight, as a light wind from the southeast increases humidity levels once again. A few outlying areas may even see some areas of fog develop toward morning.  Otherwise it’s partly cloudy, with mild lows in the upper 60s to low 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

On Tuesday we’re in for a moderately humid day, and perhaps a few more clouds as high pressure shifts offshore, although skies should remain at least partly sunny. Highs climb to near 90, with only a slight chance of a late-day thunderstorm, mainly west of D.C. We’re partly cloudy and muggy Tuesday night, with lows in the low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

The chances for a shower or storm rise to around 30-40% on Wednesday, thanks to humidity back in the high range and a nearby warm front. Skies should be partly to mostly sunny for much of the day, sending highs into the upper 80s to low 90s. Confidence: Medium
