FORECAST IN DETAIL

We’re much cooler today, but still a few degrees above average. Areas north and west of D.C. could see a brief wintry mix late tonight, but for most of us it’s just rain into tomorrow morning. After that, the weather should mostly cooperate through New Year’s Day.

Today (Wednesday): Some clouds may linger across the northern suburbs through the morning hours, with everyone turning mostly sunny by afternoon. Highs range from the mid-40s in those cooler and cloudier spots north of town, to near 50 where the sun breaks out early on. A cool breeze blows from the northwest around 10 mph during the morning, diminishing a bit into the afternoon. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Mostly clear evening skies see increasing clouds overnight, with rain moving in from the west after 2 a.m. or so, maybe starting as a wintry mix north and west. Most of the metro area should stay above freezing with lows in the mid-to-upper 30s. But areas far north and west, including Frederick and Loudoun counties, could see a few slick spots as lows dip into the low 30s. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Thursday): A light wind from the south gets our far northern and western suburbs safely above freezing by 6 a.m. or so. Rain remains likely area-wide through early-to-mid morning, before exiting to the east by late morning. Afternoon skies may see partial clearing as highs reach the mid-40s to low 50s, with winds increasing to 10-20 mph from the west. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Those winds from the west remain rather breezy through the night. That brings drier air into the region as lows settle in the upper 20s to low 30s. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

We’re still breezy on Friday with partly sunny skies and highs near 40 to the mid-40s. Saturday should stay partly sunny with somewhat lighter winds and highs in the 40s. Can’t rule out a stray shower for New Year’s Eve on Saturday night, but with a light wind from the south-southwest, midnight temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s aren’t terribly cold. Confidence: Medium-High

As of now New Year’s Day (Sunday) looks mostly dry with just a slight chance of a shower as highs head for the upper 40s to low 50s. Rain chances may increase again Sunday night into Monday. Confidence: Low-Medium
