FORECAST IN DETAIL

The race is on: Will we warm to a record (80 at Reagan National and BWI, 81 Dulles) before showers put an end to this crazy, confused weather? Once again, rain amounts amount to little and the garden grumbling grows louder. Still, for all you “fallists,” this is a weekend to celebrate so get out and glory as the abundant sunshine highlights the autumn foliage. But best of all … an extra hour to sleep in Sunday morning!

Today (Thursday): Clouds should start to gather by midmorning but the warmup is still likely to be impressive. Showers are expected to begin scattering across the region by early afternoon and timing will determine whether we capture records or fall short in the mid-to-upper 70s. My bet is we just make it. There could be a rumble of thunder in some parts of the area but rain amounts are still mainly enough to settle the dust and little more. Winds are brisk from the west with gusts into the 20s when the showers arrive. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Showers are likely to linger over the area through the evening but are mainly a nuisance with amounts unlikely to exceed a tenth of an inch in most cases. Winds remain gusty from the west through the night but showers end around midnight with clearing near dawn. Lows range from mid-40s northwest to lower 50s downtown and southeast. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Friday): Few clouds mar the sky and that sunshine is needed. Brisk winds from the northwest gusting into the 20s and much cooler temps are back in place. Highs only reach the upper 50s to lower 60s giving us a rare day of below normal readings. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: A clear view to the west is assured so as dark settles in take a look at the crescent moon surrounded by Mars, Venus and Saturn. Breezes finally let up but the chill is still there as temps fall quickly and bottom out in the mid-upper 30s in our cooler suburbs to near 40 downtown. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Saturday has fall written all over it. It starts out crisp but quickly warms up to near 60 under blue skies and calm winds. The night is star-filled and calm as well with lows in the 40s. Confidence: High

A sunshiny Sunday is much like the prior day, just a little better with highs reaching the low-to-mid 60s and made even better by calm winds. The one disappointment is an hour earlier sunset as daylight saving time is off for the winter. Overnight lows range from the upper 30s to the mid-40s. Confidence: High

Monday remains gorgeous with highs in the low-to-mid 60s under sunny skies. Confidence: Medium-High
