FORECAST IN DETAIL

If you’re confused by this weather, you’re not alone. It’s felt more like May than February — and more May-like days are in the pipeline.

Temperatures do take a small step back today and tomorrow following the amazing weekend but are still well above normal. Then, incredibly, they jump back up Wednesday through Friday — possibly even higher than before and some records may fall. A weak cold front coming through the region Saturday means we cool down slightly by Sunday.

Today (Monday): A backdoor cold front oozes southward through the region. This switches our wind direction to out of the north (at around 10 mph), drawing in somewhat cooler temperatures. Under a mix of clouds and sun, most locations from the District south should reach 60 to 65, while locations north of the District may get held up in the upper 50s to low 60s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Partly cloudy and you’ll notice a slight chill in the air, but nothing extreme. Lows range from the mid-to-upper 30s in our cooler suburbs to the low 40s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): This is one of the week’s cooler days but still may end up about 10 degrees warmer than normal. Winds from the east probably keep us wedged in a bit under considerable cloud cover. Even so, temperatures should rise well into the 50s. If we manage some intervals of sunshine, 60 can’t be ruled out. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Skies are mostly cloudy and we could see some spotty showers in the evening and overnight (30 percent chance). Lows range through the 40s. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Wednesday through Friday are all unseasonably mild with highs each day at least 65 to 70. Thursday and Friday have the best chance of surpassing 70 — and 75 or so isn’t out of the question. Ultimately, the amount of sunshine will determine how high temperatures get as each day will probably have at least partial cloud cover. Overnight periods will be very mild with lows mostly in the 50s. Confidence: Medium

Showers are likely Saturday as a cold front sweeps through the area, but it won’t be a washout. And temperatures should be very mild for one more day with highs well into the 60s. Confidence: Medium

It dries out and turns breezy and colder Saturday night into Sunday, with lows 35 to 40 Sunday morning, and highs Sunday near 55. Confidence: Medium
