As Hurricane Matthew poses an increasing threat to Florida and the Southeast coast, we’re watching for possible storm impacts here in the Mid-Atlantic this weekend- although overnight trends have reduced the threat. In the meantime, high pressure delivers a stretch of partly sunny and pleasant days to finish out the workweek.

Today (Wednesday): With high pressure still in control, a mostly cloudy morning gives way to partly sunny skies by afternoon. That should help afternoon highs into the upper 60s to low 70s, with low humidity and light winds from the east-northeast around 5-10 mph. Confidence: High

Tonight: “Tranquil” would be a good way to describe conditions this evening and overnight. Lows range from near 50 in the coolest spots to the mid-50s downtown, under partly cloudy skies with patchy fog possible overnight. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

High pressure begins to retreat to the north on Friday, but should maintain enough influence for another partly sunny day with highs reaching the low to mid-70s. Increasing clouds Friday night with lows in the mid-50s to low 60s. Confidence: Medium

Our weekend weather is at the mercy of the track of Hurricane Matthew, which remains uncertain at this point. The leading trend based on overnight modeling is for a partly cloudy weekend with just a chance of a shower, but there is still a chance of an extended period of significant rain and wind with more serious storm impacts east of the Chesapeake Bay if the storm track adjusts again. Weekend highs should reach somewhere in the 60s to probably low 70s . Confidence: Low
