FORECAST IN DETAIL

This week’s weather is a really a microcosm of the entire fall: It’s warmer-than-normal and rain comes in small doses. This afternoon and especially by tonight some rain is likely before we dry out Tuesday. Then, there’s an outside chance of a shower Wednesday before another dry stretch into Saturday, as it turns unseasonably mild. Chilly air may finally plunge into the region Sunday after a few showers Saturday night.

Today (Monday): A weak coastal disturbance spreads clouds over the region from south to north between the morning and midday hours. By late in the afternoon, some light rain may start to break out, especially in our southern areas. The clouds keep it a bit cool, with highs mostly in the mid-50s. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Overnight rain chances tick up to around 70 percent and rain could fall moderately at times. Amounts range from 0.1-0.5 inches, with some locally heavier totals possible, especially east near the Chesapeake Bay. Temperatures are chilly but not cold, bottoming out in the low-to-mid 40s. We’ll have a breeze from the north and northeast at around 10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Morning cloud cover should gradually erode as low pressure pulls off to our northeast. Skies become partly to mostly sunny and afternoon temperatures are pleasant – maxing out around 60. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Mostly clear skies late at night trend partly cloudy towards morning. It’s seasonably cool, with lows from the mid-30s in our colder areas to the low 40s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

The balance of Wednesday should be dry but we can’t totally rule out a shower as an upper level disturbance swings by. I’ll call for mix of clouds and sun and highs around 60. Cloud cover slowly decreases at night as lows range from the upper 30s to low 40s. Confidence: Medium

Thursday through Saturday is the week’s nicest stretch and party to a warming trend. Thursday’s mostly sunny and seasonable with highs near 60, while Friday and Saturday bounce up to 65-70, maybe even a little warmer Saturday before a cold front arrives. Overnight lows during this stretch moderate from 35-40 Thursday night to 45-50 Friday night. Confidence: Medium

Saturday night and Sunday turn chilly in the wake of a cold front that could bring some showers Saturday evening. Lows try to dip into the 30s by early Sunday morning and highs Sunday struggle to reach 50 despite mostly sunny skies. Confidence: Medium
