FORECAST IN DETAIL

Not much to speak of today other than a possible afternoon flurry. That all changes, though, with a decent chance of flurries or light snow this evening or overnight. Accumulation isn’t a sure bet, but it’s possible some of us could wake up tomorrow morning to a fresh dusting or slightly more.

Today (Sunday): Occasional breaks of sunshine become fewer and further between as the day rolls on. It’s a fairly benign day on the whole, with temperatures topping out in the mid-40s and a light wind from the west at 5-10 mph. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a stray late-afternoon flurry or sprinkle, but anything more than that should hold off. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Chances for flurries and a brief period of light snow increase this evening and especially overnight as a quick pulse of energy races by. Nothing too impressive, and we could end up with just flurries. But with late-night temperatures sinking into the mid-20s to low 30s, a well-timed period of light snow could accumulate up to an inch on grass and elevated surfaces, with a lighter coating and some slick spots possible on mainly untreated roads. Confidence: Low-Medium

Tomorrow (Monday): Slick spots remain a risk, mainly on untreated roads, into the early part of the morning commute. Our best chance for flurries or light snow closes down by 9 a.m. or so, which is also when most areas should see temperatures recovering to near or above freezing. A few more flurries or a snow shower remain possible through the day, with little or no additional accumulation expected. With winds gusting from the northwest around 25 mph, it’s a rather raw day as highs hold in the mid-30s to near 40 under partly cloudy skies. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Skies remain partly cloudy as the winds abate somewhat. Overall it’s a quiet night with lows dipping to the mid-20s to near 30. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Winds begin to pick up again on Tuesday, but this time they’re from a more southerly direction as low pressure passes to our north. Partly to mostly cloudy skies might produce a passing rain or snow shower, especially north of D.C., as highs manage the mid-40s to near 50. Tuesday night sees partly cloudy skies with lows falling to near 30 to the mid-30s. Confidence: Medium

Not much change for your Wednesday other than perhaps some more sunshine. We’ll call it partly sunny as highs return to the mid-40s to near 50, with winds still on the breezy side. Confidence: Medium

SNOW POTENTIAL INDEX
A daily assessment of the potential for at least 1 inch of snow in the next week, on a 0-10 scale.

3/10 (): Still a long shot, but not impossible a well-timed band of light snow late tonight could give someone an inch.
