FORECAST IN DETAIL

Unseasonable warmth builds the next three days but probably falls shy of records. It all comes to a crashing end late Saturday as a strong cold front reminds us that we are on the verge of winter. Showers remain scarce with the front but could mix with a snowflake or two overnight. Howling winds late Saturday into Sunday set loose a more dependable shower … of leaves. Redskins fans should be dry but wind-chilled, so bundle up!

Today (Thursday): Sunshine is the rule for the day, with clouds a rarity. Only light northwesterly breezes help make highs mainly in the lower 60s comfortable. Confidence: High

Tonight: Nearly calm winds and starry skies allow temps to drop rapidly after the oh-so-early sunset. Lows cover a wide range from the mid-30s to lower 40s in the suburbs to the mid-40s downtown. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Friday): This is a day meant to be outdoors. Nearly calm winds, sun-filled skies and highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s … heavenly. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: The evening remains comfortable for outdoor activities, with readings only slowly falling through the 60s with minimal breezes. Lows range from the mid-to-upper 40s in most areas but hold around 50 downtown. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Saturday starts out just as good as the day before but an approaching cold front is likely to push clouds into the area by midday and winds build steadily from the southwest. Highs should still peak in the mid-to-upper 60s. Showers should hold off until later in the afternoon and evening and even then are pretty spotty and light, with most areas likely to do no better than a tenth of an inch. There is a slight chance for a flake of snow to mix with any showers lingering overnight. Temps plummet down into the 30s. Confidence: Medium

Clouds break up quickly on Sunday but a partly cloudy sky prevails through the day. Most noteworthy will be gusty northwest winds pumping in plenty of cold air. Highs only manage the mid-to-upper 40s and feel colder than that. Overnight the cold really takes hold, with mid-to-upper 20s in most areas and only lower 30s in town. Confidence: Medium-High

Monday returns to mainly sunny and less windy conditions, but highs are only in the mid-to-upper 40s. Confidence: Medium-High
