FORECAST IN DETAIL

The transition between seasons are challenging times for a forecaster. The weather often flips easily between what feel like complete opposites. We’re totally in that phase now — today’s warmth collapses into late-winter chill by tomorrow and lingers into Friday morning. By the weekend, we should see spring return with showers to quench our thirsty soil.

Today (Tuesday): A few early morning showers are possible, especially south and east of the city. Otherwise, cloudy conditions should dominate the morning, giving way to partly cloudy weather this afternoon. Assuming we get the sunshine, temperatures warm strongly into the 60s. There’s a chance, though, that clouds will stick around which will keep highs cooler. Light winds blow from the northwest at 5 to 10 mph.  Confidence: High

Tonight: Partly cloudy overnight and things turn cooler. Look for lows in the 30s in most of the area with right around 40 in the city. Breezes blow from the northwest again at 5-10 mph. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Morning clouds give way to afternoon sunshine, and we’ll want to see more of that as temperatures only peak out in the middle to upper 40s in the afternoon — maybe touching 50 around the city south and east. A wind chill compounds the situation with stronger flow from the northwest at 15-20 mph as gusts reach up to 25 or even 30 mph at times. That’ll make the 40s feel like 30s. Sorry! Confidence: Medium-high

Tomorrow night: Mostly clear and still a bit breezy as temperatures drop to their lowest point of the week.  Lows by dawn range through the 20s to deliver yet another hard freeze to the area.  Breezes blow from the northwest at about 5-10 mph.  Confidence: Medium-high

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday should offer up sunny skies, but the high pressure responsible for it also keeps a cold air mass right overhead.  Highs are only about 50 (average for this time of year is 60) with calmer winds than Wednesday. Thursday night sneaks in a few clouds with lows ranging from the middle 20s to low 30s — another freeze for most. Confidence: Medium

Friday begins our ascent back into springtime weather with partly cloudy skies and highs up into the upper 50s to maybe middle 60s. Friday night keeps clouds around with much warmer lows only at about 50. Confidence: Medium

The weekend is a mixed message with increasing clouds on Saturday, maybe a stray shower, but the headline is highs in the lower to middle 70s! Shower chances increase Saturday night with lows in the lower to middle 50s range, while Sunday seems a wetter day with showers, clouds, and highs mostly in the 60s. Remember: We need the rain!  Confidence: Medium
