FORECAST IN DETAIL

Sunday marked the fifth straight day at or above 90 degrees in D.C. To start this week, we’ll add another day or two to the streak before a midweek reprieve. But then there is the potential for the hottest weather of the summer late this weekend, when triple-digit highs are a possibility. Storm chances will be limited this week; today may present the best opportunity, and it’s a marginal one.

Today (Monday): It’s a steamy one. Under a mix of sun and clouds, highs head for the mid-90s, but humidity is up noticeably compared with the weekend. The combination of heat and humidity makes it feel close to 100 at times this afternoon. There’s a 20-30 percent chance of storms developing late, highest in our western areas. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: A few evening storms are possible, but they should be hit or miss — with the most action west and northwest of the District. Otherwise, it’s partly cloudy and muggy, with overnight lows ranging from near 70 in our cooler suburbs to the mid-to-upper 70s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Skies are variably cloudy and we can’t rule out a shower or storm, but most activity may focus to the south and southeast of the metro area. Humidity levels may ease slightly (dew points falling into the mid-60s) during the afternoon, with highs near 90. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: It should be a pleasant summer evening as a drier breeze from the north slowly lowers humidity while temperatures are comfortable. Lows range from 65 to 70. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Wednesday through Friday will be partly to mostly sunny with temperatures and humidity increasing each and every day. Wednesday is the best of the bunch with low humidity (for the time of year, dew points in the 50s) and highs in the mid-80s. Highs climb to near 90 Thursday with moderate humidity (dew points in the low 60s). By Friday, it’s uncomfortably hot and humid (dew points near 70) with highs in the mid-90s. Overnight lows warm from the 60s Wednesday night to 75-80 by Friday night. Confidence: Medium

If some of our hottest forecast models are right, the weekend will be ugly with high humidity and sweltering temperatures. Highs both days should be into the 90s, and triple-digit heat cannot be ruled out. Overnight lows will be mostly in the 70s, but it may be one of those regimes where downtown areas don’t fall below 80. Confidence: Medium
