FORECAST IN DETAIL

The disorienting wave of warmth continues into Wednesday, forcing us to double check the calendar to remember what time of year it is. Record high temperatures are likely today even though sunshine is disrupted by clouds and showers. But there will still be plenty of warm highs in the 60s tomorrow before the cold from moves through. Precipitation could change to snow late Wednesday night into Thursday, with some accumulation chances north and west of the city. We stay cold into Friday before another round of spring-like warming this weekend.

Today (Tuesday): Partly to mostly cloudy with a chance of showers until midday. Highs rocket up into the middle 60s to around 70 (the current record high at National Airport is 64!). Winds blow stronger from the south at 10-15 mph with gusts to 20-25 at times. Rainfall totals less than a tenth of an inch. Confidence: Medium-high

Tonight: Partly cloudy with light overnight showers possible. Very warm as temperatures hold in the 50s. Those breezes keep going though too with 10-15 mph winds from the southwest along with occasional gusts up to about 20 mph. Confidence: Medium-high

Tomorrow (Wednesday): A cold front glides through the area today but warm air hangs on through the afternoon. Highs are in the 60s. Skies should be mostly cloudy along with more shower chances or even a thundershower; however, if we get any sun breaks, then we could see a run at 70 again in some spots. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Colder air rushes into the area and a wave along the front delivers some rain showers that could turn to snow after midnight and by the early dawn hours. Lows range from the middle 30s to around 40. Some colder spots in the far north and west could pick up some light accumulation toward rush hour, so keep an eye on this potential. Breezy conditions again.  Confidence: Low-medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Snow showers are possible on Thursday. In most areas the ground too warm for snow to stick but we can’t rule out some grassy accumulation. for accumulation, but we can’t rule out some grassy wet snow appearances. High temperatures range from the upper 30s to low 40s. A breezy situation offers some colder wind chills too — a sharp contrast to our former spring-like weather. Thursday night runs partly cloudy with colder temperatures into the 20s with a few teens possible in the outer suburbs. Confidence: Low-medium

Friday is the coldest day of the week with highs only reaching the 30s to around 40. We should at least get some mostly sunny skies as some consolation. Friday night is mostly clear with lows in the 20s in the outer suburbs to the 30s in the city. Confidence: Medium

The weekend surges back quickly in the warmer direction.  Unfortunately, skies are partly to mostly cloudy through the weekend with highs popping into the 50s on Saturday and then 60s on Sunday with a chance of showers. Saturday night aims for partly cloudy skies with lows in the warmer 40s. Confidence: Medium
