FORECAST IN DETAIL

This thick and muggy air mass is in its final hours. A vigorous cold front is approaching which will bring a fantastic change by tomorrow. Unfortunately, the Fourth of July weekend gets a bit more complicated as another cold front approaches. Things will get warmer and more humid by again by Friday, and showers and thunderstorms are possible through Sunday. There is a chance we clear out Sunday afternoon into Monday — nicer weather, just in time!

Today (Tuesday): Mostly cloudy in the morning with the potential to become partly cloudy later in the afternoon. Thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon and evening, some of which could be strong or even severe. Highs should get up into the middle to upper 80s. Any brief breaks of sun could push a few of us briefly to 90 degrees, and the humidity is elevated (middle to upper 60s dew points). Winds blow from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: A few more storms and showers are possible. Total rainfall between today and tonight should range from 1/4 to 1/2 inch with locally higher totals around heavier thunderstorms. Light winds from the southwest shift to come from the northwest very late at night. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Wednesday):  Much lower humidity and more comfortable temperatures arrive for the mid-week. Skies may be partly cloudy in the morning shifting to mostly sunny in the afternoon as highs only manage the lower to middle 80s with much drier dew points. Light winds from the northwest at 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Mostly clear, cool and comfortable with high pressure overhead. Lows range from the upper 50s in the outer suburbs to the middle 60s in the city. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday brings more beautiful bounty with mostly sunny skies, low humidity and highs in the cooler-than-normal lower to middle 80s. Thursday night brings in a few clouds with lows in the 60s. Confidence: High

Friday delivers even more clouds and some increased humidity, but high temperatures only manage the middle 80s. Afternoon showers and storms become possible. More showers and storms are possible Friday night too with lows ranging from the middle 60s to low 70s. Confidence: Medium

The holiday weekend might get bisected with a warmer, muggier pattern in the front half and a cooler, nicer pattern with the second. Saturday should see warmer highs in the middle to upper 80s with moderate to high humidity along with afternoon to evening scattered showers and storms with partly to mostly cloudy sky conditions. Saturday night aims for continued cloudiness with scattered showers and storms as lows range from the upper 60s to middle 70s. Scattered showers and storms could continue into the first half of Sunday before a cool front swings through to maybe give us a nice afternoon. Highs should range in the lower to middle 80s. Cooler Sunday night with lows back into the 60s. The July 4th outlook looks nicer with mostly sunny skies, low humidity, and highs in the comfortable low to middle 80s. Confidence: Low-Medium
