FORECAST IN DETAIL

We’ve got a multitude of warnings and advisories still in effect for parts of the area this morning. In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s a tad windy out there. We’re in for not just raucous winds today, but a roller-coaster week of weather with erratic temperatures, multiple bouts of gusty winds, a couple chances of sub-freezing temperatures, and a batch of showers for good measure. For today, though, the story is the wind and cold…

Today (Sunday): The good news is, the winds diminish by afternoon. The bad news is, they’ll gust up to near 45 mph from the west-northwest during the morning, before decreasing to 20-30 mph this afternoon. Some other good news–we’ll have mostly sunny skies, and yet temperatures are in for a struggle. Highs only manage the upper 40s to low 50s, and with the wind, it feels like the 20s and 30s for much of the day. Confidence: High

Tonight: Winds become light this evening, and then pick up a bit overnight, coming from the south around 10-15 mph. Clouds are on the increase with a warm front just to our north, and that should keep temperatures from falling off a whole bunch, as lows range from the mid-30s to mid-40s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Monday): A fast-moving storm system approaches the area tomorrow. But there’s some warmer air out ahead of it, along with partly sunny skies, and winds gusting near 25-30 mph from the southwest. A band of showers is likely to pass through from northwest to southeast, sometime between late morning and early evening. If the showers arrive on the early side, then some of our northern and western suburbs could see highs held to the upper 50s to low 60s. Areas closer to the Beltway and to the south and east have a better shot at reaching the mid-60s to near 70. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Showers should exit by mid-evening, as a cold front moves away to the southeast. Behind the front, we’ll see winds turn gusty again, this time from the north. Clearing skies and a fresh batch of cold air means we head down toward the freezing mark once again. Lows dip to the upper 20s in the suburbs, and the low-to-mid 30s inside the Beltway. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Tuesday is another windy day with a wintry chill. Skies are mostly sunny as high pressure builds into the area, but that does little to overcome the influx of cold. Temperatures struggle into the 40s and likely get stuck there for highs, with only an outside chance at touching 50. Winds relent Tuesday night, but it’s another cold one with lows down to the mid-20s to mid-30s. Confidence: Medium-High

We get a little improvement for our Wednesday, as we hold on to mostly to partly sunny skies and highs get back to the 50s. Don’t worry if you haven’t had enough of the winds by then. It seems they’ll want to pick up again from the south during the afternoon. Confidence: Medium-High
