MPR News Capitol View
By Mike Mulcahy

Good morning, and welcome to Election Day.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. If you’re an eligible voter in line by 8, the polls won’t close until you cast your ballot. We’ll be on the radio tonight on MPR News starting at 7 and we’ll have results at MPRNews.org starting just after the polls close.

Having trouble making up your mind? Check out our voter guides to see where the candidates stand on the issues.

Wondering what will be on your ballot? We can help with that too.

As of Monday about  587,000 Minnesota voters had already cast their ballots.  The latest figures provided by the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office have the early balloting ahead of the 2018 pace, which is the previous non-presidential year election. Compared with four years ago, 47,000 more ballots have been accepted at this stage. The numbers include ballots cast in person at early voting sites and those dropped off or returned by mail.

Are you tired of all the ads?MPR’s Mark Zdehlik reports lots of people are. At least they’ll be gone after today (for a while).

This year, at least three cities in Minnesota — Duluth, St. Cloud and Waite Park — are asking voters to increase their taxes to pay for parks and trails. Nationally, there are 62 state and local park or land conservation measures on the ballot this year, from New York to Chicago to Los Angeles. MPR’s Dan Kraker has the story.

The Associated Press reports:The Justice Department will send monitors to 24 states including Minnesota in an effort to ensure compliance with federal voting rights laws in Tuesday's elections.  The action, which occurs regularly on Election Day, comes as civil rights groups and the federal government have raised alarm over potential voter intimidation at some polling places and ballot boxes. The 2022 election is playing out against the backdrop of persistent falsehoods made by former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies about losing the 2020 vote, a relentless campaign that will have implications as people cast their ballots. Democrats, on the other hand, have expressed concerns over the potential for voter suppression.

NPR reminds usit could be a while before all the results are in.
